The commitment of St. James-Assiniboia School Division to sustainable living is evident through our daily practices. MyEcoSchool.com profiles many examples of student and staff initiated sustainability projects as well as our five year Strategic Plan (2009-2014).
The Strategic Plan presents our division's Beliefs, Values, Strategic Outcomes, Strategic Focus areas, Strategic Actions, and Indicators of Success. The first strategic outcome of our plan is that "students will value the betterment of an ever-changing world". Some examples of strategic focus areas in our plan include: students practice and promote sustainable living habits, students practice and promote social responsibility for self and others, and students are engaged in the community in a positive way. The postings on the SJASD myEcoSchool site demonstrate that we are achieving many of the Indicators of Success that we are collectively striving for including:
Importantly, many examples of student and staff learning and successes are celebrated on the SJASD myEcoSchool site. It is our hope that students and staff throughout the division will feel encouraged and acknowledged for their efforts; this is also an Indicator of Success. We very much appreciate their leadership, inspiration, and practical efforts towards making our local and global community more sustainable!

Schools have also worked hard to develop unique and impressive School Goal Setting plans which identify important actions undertaken by each school, teams within each school, and by individuals towards achieving sustainability. See (SJASD Sustainable Living Goal Setting 2008/09).
Some exciting news is that SJASD is currently researching and developing a comprehensive sustainability policy that will support our mission to "provide diverse and comprehensive programming in a safe and caring environment to prepare all students to be responsible citizens in a democratic society". The aim of our sustainable development policy is to create a healthy, ecological, economic, and socially responsible living and learning environment for all students and staff and to make our school division a model of best practice for the whole community. This commitment will be accomplished through development and further review of policies and practices in the following categories:

Education is the most effective means that society possesses for confronting the challenges of the future. Indeed, education will shape the world of tomorrow. Progress increasingly depends upon the products of educated minds: upon research, invention, innovation and adaptation. Of course, educated minds and instincts are needed not only in laboratories and research institutes, but in every walk of life. Indeed, access to education is the sine qua non for effective participation in the life of the modern world at all levels. Education, to be certain, is not the whole answer to every problem. But education, in its broadest sense, must be a vital part of all efforts to imagine and create new relations among people and to foster greater respect for the needs of the environment.
