As a teacher you are short on time, right? Resources to introduce sustainable development into the classroom have been researched and prepared for you by the St. James-Assiniboia School Division, and are presented in the Get Started guide. This resource guide was developed to encourage you to explore the concept of sustainable development education, include sustainable development into lesson plans, and incorporate global citizenship action into the daily lives of your students. The package includes information about sustainability knowledge, skills, values and life practices; a multimedia teacher education program; featured websites for consideration; youth action programs; ideas for classroom speakers, field trip ideas, and days to celebrate. The Government of Manitoba’s website on “Education for Sustainability” (ESD) is available to help Manitoba teachers integrate sustainability topics, issues, and approaches into their classroom activities. See www.edu.gov.mb.ca/k12/esd/index.html The “Education for a Sustainable Future” documents can be accessed on this website. These are a resource for teachers, curriculum developers, and administrators and are intended to assist in the integration of sustainability concepts into new and existing curricula. This exciting program has been developed by Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth to recognize schools which show a commitment to education for sustainable development. RCM offers FREE engaging and educational classroom presentations for public schools in Winnipeg through their Environmental Speakers Bureau (ESB). The presentations address recycling, composting, and other resource conservation topics. Teachers outside Winnipeg can order a resource kit containing presentation scripts, backgrounders, activity ideas and reproducible handouts. Learning for a Sustainable Future is a non-profit Canadian organization created to integrate Education for Sustainable Development into the curricula at all grade levels in Canada. UNESCO has developed a comprehensive multimedia teacher education program. It contains 100 hours (divided into 25 modules) of professional development for use in pre-service teacher courses as well as the in-service education of teachers, curriculum developers, education policy makers, and authors of educational materials. It is rooted in a new vision of education focused on helping students better understand the world in which they live, addressing the complexity and interconnectedness of problems such as poverty, wasteful consumption, environmental degradation, population, health, conflict and human rights that threaten our future.
